A Ryokan is a traditional Japanese Inn. Our Inn is locatd in the famous hamlet of Hijiori Onsen, in the scenic Dewa -sanchi mountains of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. This is very close to the Shonai District and is in the Mogami District, both of which were written about in the famous James Carvel novel "Shogun" about 17th Century Japan.
Our history is very old, dating back some 1200 years. Legend has it that a famous lord travelling in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture discoverd the Onsen(Japanese for Hot Springs) and when he bathed in the water a miraculous thing happened; his elbow which had previously been broken, was suddenly healed. In fact our little hamlet took its name from this legend. Hijiori means broken elbow. Many locals and visitors travel from far and wide to experience the therapeutic effects of our wate.We invite you to come and stay at our lovely Japanese Country Style Inn and experience our hospitality and special ambience.
Our Inn is located on th Dozan River which flows to the famous 'Mighty' Mogami River. At our hotel you will enjoy the finest Japanese country style cooking which will be served to you while you are seated around a traditional Japanese hearth. We offer the very best of local cuisine including seafood from the nearby Sea of Japan.

■The morning market: 6:00am - 7:30am
・From the end of April to the beginning of December you will find a lively farmer market just a short walk from our hotel.
・Local farm women sell wild plants and medicinal herbs at this market.
■Jizogura and Mogami Trekking
・This area is blessed with beautiful natural scenery. While here we suggest you trek the Mogami course around Hijiori Onsen to enjoy our beautiful natural setting.
・On this course you can expect to see beautiful trees, cascading waterfalls, and other natural scenes.
■Okura-kun

■Mt. Gassan
・Of course Japan is famous for its mountains, and in a Prefecture whose name means 'mountain shape' you should expect to find many fine mountain trekking courses.
・We can assist with the trekking and climbing routes for the famous Gassan-san(Mt. Gassan)
・Mt. Gassan is famous for its gentle shape and its year round skiing! (Ski even in Summer!)
■Mt. Haguro (Haguro-san)
・There are also trekking trails on the very spiritual Haｇuro-san which is the home of the famous five story tower shrine.
■Boating
・While in this area we recommend that you experience the famous 'Mighty' Mogami River by taking a traditional Japanese River Boat Ride.
・On this ride you can experience the famous 'songs of the boatmen' and enjoy the unique explanation of the natural surroundings.
■'The Yonder Over the Mountains'
This is a famous poem written by Carl Busse and translated by Ueda Bin. It's one of my favourite, I hope you enjoy it too.
